HUGO

Throughout the movie, Hugo is seen working on clocks in the train station. This is a job that he took on due to his father's death; Hugo's Uncle Claude took him in and taught him how to wind the clocks throughout the train station. While Hugo was living with his father, he was taught how to tinker and fix gadgets. The clocks Hugo works on plays a huge part in the movie because it display Hugo's skill with gears and tools.

The Clocktower
In this scene, Hugo travels up the clock tower in the train station and begins his work. This video shows us the inside of the clock tower and what makes it function.
The Automaton

The automaton was discovered abandoned in the museum by Hugo's father. Hugo and his father worked on the automaton together, and after his father's death, Hugo took the automaton with him to live with his uncle. Hugo struggles to make the automaton work, believing that his father has left him a message. But the only thing missing was a heart-shaped key that Isabelle possessed.
